Print Advert: Shaz

On this assignment I had to design my own print ad for Hovis. I did some reseach to see some of Hovis' professional ads they made. The ads i found mainly used the same techniques, for example here are 3 Hovis print ads that promise a benefit which is a professional advertising technique:

The three of these ads are promising a benefit, ''voted britain's softest white.'' ''makes a fitter britain'' and ''the softest thing since sliced bread''. two of them claim hovis is hovis is the softest bread and the other one claims Hovis makes a fitter britain, meaning Hovis strenghthens people of britain.

Hovis also uses exageration and uses creaivity to produce ads out of this world. Here are three Hovis ads that exagerate things and use fiction:

Print Advert Analysis 2

In a fantasy world where animals and people don’t have enough food to replenish their hunger fully! Starving people hear a myth about a place full of food ( bread) they all go on an adventure to find this, through rough weather, day and night, they keep travelling. Until one day they cross a hill and find this beach full of Hovis bread! They all eat as much they could, some over do it. All the animals and people eat as much as they want and after they are done they realize that did not make the tiniest bit of difference to the sea of bread. They all live happily ever after.
in the advert no one is shown but in the story many characters are used. I.e males, females of different ages. A variety of animals.
The advert is shown to be set on a massive beach of bread/sea. In the story however a lot of places are used. E.g People’s homes, the places they pass while travelling and of course the main beach of bread shown in the advert.
As for camera shots, a Wide shot is used to show the product, scenery and where it is set.
The colours used In the scene are very relaxing and eye soothing. Even if the viewer isn’t affected directly, the colours might affect them un consciously. Use of beautiful scenery and Chilled soothing colours to affect the viewers emotions and thoughts about the product. The soothing colours and the beautiful place the ad is set in helps the viewers’ mind relax and create a calm atmosphere making the viewer automatically have a good impression of the advert and the product.

Print Advert analysis 1

4 kids playing together for quite a while, Kids get hungry and tired, feel tired. Eat  a bit of this Hovis extra fibre bread. Get super human strength and carry the whole loaf back home from the playground to share with everyone.
The part of advert that is shown only shows 4 caracters, the 4 kid. But the story has a bit more characters. Families , parents, mom, dad and more children of various ages.
The advert doesn’t show a specific background, only children holding up the big loaf of bread and a plain blue background. The story however uses a few different sets eg.  Playground where they were playing , path home where they find the loaf of bread , way home and finally home.
As for camera shots, a Wide shot is Used to show the Kids, their clothes, and the big loaf of bread.
The use of kids holding up the loaf and the slogan saying  now with even more fibre shows its aimed at children. Fibre is very good for children as it helps them with their growth. To make the target audience clear to everyone, they use children in the advert and a slogan that would benefit them.

Advertisment Analysis 2

The ad i analysed for the the second part of the analysis is called the Holvis British Farmers - Helping dad.

The story of the ad I analysed is a father farmer is getting ready to go to his farm, he is wearing his clothes and his son asks if he can come with him to help. the father allows him to come with him. They do a lot of work together and the child tries very hard as if he wants to make his father proud. At the end when they come back home the kid’s mom asks how he (the child) did. The father says he did great. The narrator then starts to describe what the ad is about. Characters used in the ad are shown as a family father, son, animals , wife.
The ad is set in a country side farm. The scene changes because the characters travel to different places, from their house. The places they travel to are a barn house, living room, stairs, open field.
There were a variety of camera shots used in the ad. Those were Wide shot, high shot, mid shot, close up.
The way these different angles were used was mostly to show where the characters are, who they are with, what they are doing or just the scenery (eg the establishing shot) Ws used to show scenery and where the characters are, HS used to show the area and the characters eg the field and  the father and son on it. Mid shot to show the characters and what at they are doing and Close ups used to show facial expressions eg when the boy pushes the truck out of the mud his face is full of mud and he looks tired.
The technique the ad uses are very effective. The ad uses words and lines that work nicely to attract their target audience eg ‘’ its good to work with British farmers, new holvis British farmers loaf, baked with Britain’s best wheat’’ The narrator saying that tells us clearly that the target audience are British citizens proud to be British.
The props used in the ad to make the atmosphere more realistic are also very well done and planned. The ad uses real animals, tries to use real emotions and also it is based on a farm so they filmed the ad on a farm. The ad also uses real weather rather than making fake rain i.e the rain scene where the father and son get under a shelter and eat a sandwich. Which helps makes it more realistic and more relative to what the narrator is saying and what point or story the ad is trying to get across to the viewers.

advertisment analysis 1

The advert that I analysed is for hovis bread. The advert is called invisible crust.
Here is the advert video:

The story is a farmer and his child are desiging a farm design, where the crops machine will go, how it will cut the crops. Then a cut scene shows the child eating a crust free sandwich. The narrator ( female ) tells us children often leave the crust part of the bread. At the end the child eats the last part of the bread proving that the ‘invisible crust’ bread / product actually delivers what it claims. This advert is very appropriate for the product because it clearly shows its target audience are children. It does so by using a child as a character, the narrator talks about children, ‘’children often leave their crusts’’. That one sentence tells us this advert is about kids who leave the crusts of bread. Also this ad is appropriate for kids because only children ( at least most of the time ) leave the crust part of their bread/sandwiches and this product will help parents not have to go through the hassle of neither cutting the crust or throwing it away.

The story is told with motion pictures/video and a narrative. The video helps us understand the story better because visuals make things easier to understand. The narrator makes it even more easier for us by telling us what the advert is about, eg ‘’ children often leave the crusts,  but with hovis’ invisible crust theres nothing to leave.
There is no humor used in the advert mainly because bread isn’t usually a funny topic.
For sound, a narrator and music is used. However there are no sounds of what is shown is the video for example the crop machine on the field would make a lot of noise but this advert cuts that sound out. The music used is very soothing and calm, helps the listener calm down. The reason for that could be that the advertisers, Hovis, are trying to use the specific music to tell viewers and listners that now they can calm down and not have to worry about the crust on the bread.
The effects used in the advert are used very well and fine as they are. The effects are mainly used to show the crop machine making a crust free bread to help viewers understand the a

Introduction

For this assignment I will be analyzing adverts for Hovis bread. I then have a choice to make and to pick an advert to analyse. I will deeply analyse the chosen advert and look at things a normal eye would not see or analyse. I will look at the structure, sounds, camera shots, subliminal messages (if there is one) or messages that would affect the viewer without them knowing. (e.g the music in Hovis bread advert called Invisible crust. I will also comment on the advert and say what i think of it and how it affects me.
